The Ancient Breed
Who They Are
The Tibetan mastiff originated as a herding and guardian dog for the nomads of Tibet, and as a watchdog in Tibetan monasteries. Unlike other LGD type breeds they have been used against not only predatory animals but also bandits wishing to steal or harm property and family. The Tibetan mastiff is a phenotypically distinct landrace dog breed that was bred as a flock guardian in the high altitudes of the Himalayas and the plains of the Tibetan Plateau.
Tibetan mastiffs were also used as war dogs by the Romans, Ghangas Khan, and Guerrilla fighters during the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
The Tibetan Mastiff is serious and magisterial, calm and quiet; unless provoked. Upstage with strangers, he/she will remain watchful every moment they are on the premises or property. This powerful, rugged breed with the solemn expression is not inclined to play fetch or frolic in the yard with you.
They have remained so pure over the years due to geographical isolation up until relatively recently in history compared to how long they have actually been in existence. They are one of the oldest dog breeds, originating over 50,000 years ago. Very few, if any, genetic lineages of dogs now are pure over that huge length of time without careful planning and directed breeding by humans. There are hundreds of breeds that used to be around, but no longer exist at all because the entire population has interbred with other breeds.
Our dogs are DNA tested 100% Tibetan Mastiff.
